Revised Open Market Sale Scheme (Domestic) Policy for 2024-25
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution has announced a revised policy aimed at improving food security and boosting ethanol production. The new policy sets the reserve price for rice at ₹2,250 per quintal for sale to state governments, corporations, and community kitchens, without the need for e-auctions. This price has been reduced by ₹550.
About the Food Corporation of India (FCI):
- Genesis: The FCI is a statutory body established under the Food Corporations Act, 1964.
- Ministry: Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution.
Key Objectives of FCI:
- Provide effective price support operations to protect farmers’ interests.
- Ensure the distribution of food grains across the country through the public distribution system.
- Maintain adequate operational and buffer stocks of food grains to ensure national food security.
What is the Open Market Sale Scheme (Domestic)?
- About: Under this scheme, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) sells surplus food grains (wheat and rice) from the central pool in the open market via e-auction at pre-determined prices.
- Aim: The scheme helps control market prices and curb inflation.
- Eligibility: Processors, atta chakki operators, and flour millers are eligible to participate. Traders and bulk buyers are not allowed to participate through e-auctions.
- States are also permitted to procure food grains without participating in auctions.
