Recently, an eight-year-old girl from Kottakkal in the Malappuram district of Kerala passed away from Brucellosis.
About Brucellosis:
- Type: Brucellosis is a bacterial infection caused by various species of the Brucella bacteria, which primarily affect cattle, swine, goats, sheep, and dogs. The most common species causing human brucellosis worldwide is Brucella melitensis.
- Transmission: Humans typically contract the disease through direct contact with infected animals, consuming contaminated animal products, or inhaling airborne agents. Human-to-human transmission is extremely rare.
- Risks: The expansion of animal industries, urbanization, and inadequate hygiene practices in animal husbandry and food handling increase the risk of infection.
Ebola
Uganda, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other global partners, has initiated the first-ever clinical efficacy trial for a vaccine targeting the Sudan species of the Ebola virus.
About the Ebola Virus:
- Ebolavirus Genus: This genus includes six species: Zaire, Bundibugyo, Sudan, Taï Forest, Reston, and Bombali.
- Ebola Virus Disease (EVD): EVD is a rare but severe illness in humans.
- Transmission: The virus is transmitted to humans from wild animals, such as fruit bats, porcupines, and non-human primates, and can then spread among people.
- Transmission Medium: The virus spreads through contact with the blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of an infected person.
