The government has announced the creation of a Nuclear Energy Mission as part of the Union Budget for 2025-2026. This initiative supports the broader vision of Viksit Bharat, aiming to enhance energy security while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Key Highlights of the Nuclear Energy Mission:
- Goal: Achieve 100 Giga Watt (GW) of nuclear power capacity by 2047, up from the current ~8 GW.
- Focus on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs): ₹20,000 crore will be allocated for R&D to develop domestic SMRs, with the aim of launching five operational SMRs by 2033.
- Encouraging Private Sector Involvement: The government plans to amend key legislation to promote private participation, including:
- Atomic Energy Act, 1962: Establishes the framework for the development, regulation, and use of atomic energy.
- Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010: Ensures quick compensation for victims of nuclear incidents, holding operators accountable.
Government Initiatives to Strengthen India’s Nuclear Energy Sector:
- Capacity Expansion: Plans to construct and commission 10 new reactors (totaling 8 GW) in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh.
- Indigenous Achievements: The Rajasthan Atomic Power Project’s Unit-7 (RAPP-7), one of India’s largest indigenous reactors, reached criticality in 2024.
- Bharat Small Reactors (BSRs): The government is advancing the nuclear sector by developing BSRs and seeking private sector partnerships. BSRs are 220 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) known for their proven safety and performance.
