India and Qatar Upgrade Bilateral Relations to Strategic Partnership
During the state visit to India by the Amir of Qatar, both nations agreed to elevate their ties to a strategic partnership, focusing on enhancing collaboration in areas such as trade, energy, investments, technology, food security, and people-to-people relations.
Both countries also set a goal to double bilateral trade to $28 billion over the next five years.
Other Key Outcomes of the Visit:
- Two MoUs were signed to reinforce the strategic partnership, covering the avoidance of double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion.
- Additional MoUs were signed between the Qatari Businessmen Association and CII, as well as between Invest Qatar and Invest India, to foster business and investment cooperation.
India-Qatar Relations:
- Economic Ties: Bilateral trade stood at USD 14.08 billion in 2023-24, with India facing an effective trade deficit. India ranks among Qatar’s top three export destinations and is also one of the top sources for Qatar’s imports (2022-23).
- Energy Ties: Qatar is India’s largest supplier of LNG, providing over 40% of its imports.
- Defense Ties: The India-Qatar Defense Cooperation Agreement was extended for five years in 2018. Bilateral naval exercises, such as Za’ir Al Bahr, are conducted regularly, and India participates in the biennial Doha International Maritime Defense Exhibition and Conference (DIMDEX) in Qatar.
- Cultural Relations: Cultural exchanges continue under the 2012 Agreement on Cultural Cooperation, with the Indian Cultural Centre playing an active role in Qatar.
- People-to-People Ties: Qatar is home to a vibrant Indian community of over 830,000 people, which helps strengthen the cultural relationship between the two nations.
