India and the USA have announced the launch of the Autonomous Systems Industry Alliance (ASIA) initiative for Underwater Domain Awareness (UDA). This initiative, revealed during the Indian Prime Minister's recent visit to the USA, seeks to expand industry partnerships and production in the Indo-Pacific region. India is the first country with which the U.S. has chosen to collaborate on UDA technologies.
About UDA: UDA is a maritime concept that utilizes technology, strategies, and policies to monitor and manage activities beneath the sea.
Significance for India:
- Enhanced Regional Security: Helps address issues like piracy, terrorism, and interstate conflicts by detecting security risks and enabling prompt responses.
- Economic and Sustainability Interests: Supports opportunities in the blue economy and environmental management.
- Strengthening Regional Diplomacy: Builds trust and cooperation within the maritime domain, reinforcing India’s position in regional affairs.
Technologies in UDA:
- Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs): These include Remotely Operated and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles equipped with advanced sensors and cameras. India has developed UUVs like MAYA, AMOGH, and ADAMYA.
- Acoustic Surveillance: This includes sonar systems, Sonobuoys, and the Sea Picket autonomous surveillance system. India’s BEL has partnered with USA’s Ultra Maritime to co-produce Multistatic Active (MSA) sonobuoys and has collaborated with L3 Harris for active towed array sonar systems.
- Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR): Bathymetric LIDAR uses water-penetrating green light to measure seafloor and riverbed elevations.
