International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Officially Comes Into Force

The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) officially becomes a fully operational, treaty-based intergovernmental international organization and legal entity.

  • About: Based in India, IBCA is a multi-country, multi-agency coalition that includes 95 big cat range countries and non-range countries with a vested interest in big cat conservation.
  • Genesis: The IBCA was launched by the Prime Minister of India in 2023 during the ‘Commemorating 50 years of Project Tiger’ event.
  • Objective: The alliance aims to conserve seven big cat species: Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar, and Puma.
  • Primary Goal: The primary goal is to foster collaboration and synergy among stakeholders, consolidating successful conservation practices and expertise to achieve global big cat conservation.
  • Depository of the Framework Agreement: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India.
  • Members: Nicaragua, Eswatini, India, Somalia, and Liberia have signed the Framework Agreement, officially becoming members of the IBCA.
