About Svalbard Global Seed Vault

• Location: Norwegian Arctic Island
• Ownership and Management: Owned by Norway and managed in partnership between the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the regional genebank NordGen, and the Crop Trust.
• Significance: The vault serves as a safe, free, and long-term storage facility for seed duplicates from all genebanks, acting as a backup in case of nuclear war, human conflict, climate change, or other catastrophic events.
• Working Mechanism: It is kept at a low temperature of −18°C, and its permafrost and thick rock ensure that the seed samples remain frozen even without power.
• Key Contribution: The vault has helped restore seed collections lost during the Syrian war.
