NTPC has launched a cutting-edge CO2 Carbon Dioxide Battery at Kudgi Karnataka

NTPC has launched a cutting-edge CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) Battery at its Kudgi plant in Karnataka. This 160MWh (megawatt hours) facility, developed in collaboration with Triveni Turbine Ltd and Energy Dome from Italy, represents a significant advancement in Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES).

About LDES:

LDES technologies store energy for extended periods, ranging from 8 hours to several days, weeks, or even seasons.

CO2 Battery Storage System:

  • Functionality: The CO2 battery works by compressing and liquefying CO2 when energy supply is abundant (charging phase) and expanding it back into gas to power a turbine when energy demand rises (discharging phase).
  • Operation: It utilizes a ‘Closed Brayton Thermodynamic Cycle,’ which manipulates the physical states of CO2, from vapor to liquid, to charge and discharge electricity.
  • Comparison with Traditional Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): Unlike electrochemical-based BESS, the CO2 system uses electromechanical turbomachinery, resulting in minimal performance degradation over time.

Energy Storage Systems:

  • Purpose: These systems store excess energy during periods of low demand and release it when demand peaks, ensuring grid stability.
  • Significance: They contribute to a greener and more sustainable energy environment while enhancing grid reliability.

Types of Energy Storage Systems:

  1. Chemical Energy Storage Systems: These systems store chemical energy and convert it into electrical energy using electrochemical reactions, such as Lithium-Ion and Sodium-Ion Batteries.
  2. Advanced Chemical Energy Storage Systems: A new generation of more efficient, durable, and environmentally friendly chemical batteries, like CO2 batteries.
  3. Thermal Energy Storage Systems: These store thermal energy by heating or cooling a medium to use later, such as Electric Thermal Energy Storage.
