Three Rare Kalyana Chalukya-Era Kannada Inscriptions Discovered in Telangana
Three rare Kannada inscriptions from the Kalyana Chalukya era, dating back to 1129 CE, 1130 CE, and 1132 CE, have been discovered in Telangana. These inscriptions are from the reign of Emperor Someswara-III Bhulokamalladeva of the Kalyana Chalukya dynasty.
- The first inscription describes the construction of the Bijjeswara temple and records donations made by a local village chief.
- The second and third inscriptions detail additional donations made to the temple.
About the Kalyana Chalukya (or Later/Wester Chalukyas): The Later Chalukyas are considered descendants of the Chalukyas of Badami. Taila II, who defeated Rajaraja Chola in 992 AD, was their first king. They ruled the Deccan region from 973 to 1180 AD, with Kalyan (in present-day Bidar district, Karnataka) serving as their capital.
Art and Culture:
Architecture:
- Notable temples built during this period include the Kasi Vishveshvara temple at Lakkundi, Mallikarjuna temple at Kuruvatii, Kalleshwara temple at Bagali, and Mahádeva temple at Itagi.
- The Kalyana Chalukyas are also known for their ornate stepped wells (Pushkarni), which served as ritual bathing places, such as the Manikesvara Temple in Lakkundi.
Literature:
- Both Sanskrit and Kannada literature flourished during this era.
- Prominent literary figures included Pampa, Ranna, Durgasimha, and Nagavarma.
Religion:
- Several sects of Saivism, including Pashupata, Lakulisa, and Kalamukha, were prominent during this period.
- The period also saw the rise of a new social and religious movement led by Basavanna.
