Transparency International has released the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2024, which ranks 180 countries and territories based on the perceived levels of public sector corruption, using a scale from zero (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).
CPI 2024 Highlights:
The report emphasizes that corruption is significantly hindering the global fight against climate change and urges the international community to address the connection between corruption and the climate crisis.
How Corruption Affects Climate Action:
- Corruption prevents the adoption of strong policies by prioritizing the interests of small groups over the public good.
- It weakens governance systems, undermines law enforcement, and reduces transparency in environmental decision-making.
- Climate funds are often misdirected or misused, with countries highly vulnerable to climate change typically scoring below 50 on the CPI.
- Corruption exacerbates the marginalization of vulnerable communities who suffer the most from climate impacts.
- It undermines the effectiveness of multilateral efforts, increasing the opacity of climate conferences and allowing fossil fuel lobbyists to exert influence.
Other Key Findings:
- 85% of the global population lives in countries with CPI scores below 50.
- India scored 38 out of 100, a drop of one point from 2023, ranking 96th.
- Least Corrupt: Denmark, followed by Finland and Singapore.
- Most Corrupt: South Sudan, Somalia, and Venezuela.
