UN Women has released the ‘Women’s Rights in Review: 30 Years After Beijing’ report, which assesses global progress on the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA). Adopted by 189 countries, including India, in 1995, the BPfA aimed to advance gender equality in 12 key areas.
The BPfA was established at the UN’s Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China.
Key Challenges for Women Highlighted in the Report
- Economic Inequality: Women earn 20% less than men and many are in insecure, unpaid jobs. It will take 137 years to eliminate extreme poverty among women.
- Violence & Safety: One in three women experience physical or sexual violence. 53% face online gender-based abuse, and 25% of countries reported a backlash against women's rights in 2024.
- Political Exclusion: Only 87 countries have had a female leader. Women hold 27% of parliamentary seats and 36% of local government positions.
- Climate Crisis: By 2050, 236 million women could face food insecurity due to climate change.
- Gender-Responsive Policies: While 54% of countries track gender equality spending, only 26% meet the standards set by the SDGs.
The Path Forward: Beijing+30 Action Agenda
UN Women’s Beijing+30 Action Agenda outlines six key actions for gender equality, plus one focused on youth inclusion:
- Close the digital gender gap
- Promote women-centered sustainable economic development
- End violence against women
- Increase women’s leadership
- Ensure accountability in peace, security, and humanitarian efforts
- Advocate for climate justice
