Sagarmala Start-Up Innovation Initiative (S2I2) Launched to Boost Port-Led Development

The Sagarmala Start-Up Innovation Initiative (S2I2) was launched at the 4th National Sagarmala Apex Committee (NSAC) meeting, where plans for the upgrade to Sagarmala 2.0 were also discussed.

Key Highlights:

S2I2:

• Objective: The initiative aims to empower startups working in areas like green shipping, smart ports, maritime logistics, shipbuilding technology, and sustainable coastal development.
• Focus: It will accelerate RISE—Research, Innovation, Startups, and Entrepreneurship.
• Support: S2I2 will provide funding, mentorship, and industry partnerships to nurture innovative solutions in these sectors.

Sagarmala 2.0:

• Upgrade: Sagarmala 2.0 will enhance the existing Sagarmala Programme, with an added focus on shipbuilding, repair, recycling, and breaking.
• Goal: The vision behind Sagarmala 2.0 is to achieve the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision (MAKV 2047), positioning India among the world’s top five shipbuilding nations, while also expanding port handling capacity to 10 billion metric tons annually.

About the Sagarmala Programme (2015):

• Objective: The programme aims to accelerate India’s economic development by leveraging its 7,500 km coastline and 14,500 km of navigable waterways.
• Vision: It seeks to reduce logistics costs for both domestic and international cargo.
• Ministry: Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways.
• Apex Body: National Sagarmala Apex Committee (NSAC).
• Five Key Pillars: The programme focuses on Port-led Industrialization, Port Modernization, Port Connectivity, Coastal Shipping and Inland Waterways, and Coastal Community Development.
