Study Finds Increasing Flood Frequency in High Mountain Asia (HMA) Since 2000 Due to Climate Change

A recent study examining flood events in High Mountain Asia (HMA) from 1950 to 2023 confirms that rising temperatures are the primary driver of increased flooding in the region. Since 1950, HMA has warmed at a rate of 0.3°C per decade.

Key Observations:

• Flood timing has become more unpredictable. While most floods still occur during the monsoon season, there has been a notable increase in flooding outside this period.
• The global rise in temperatures, driven by the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and gas, is contributing to an increase in all four types of floods seen in the region.

Four Types of Floods in HMA:

1. Rain/Pluvial Floods (PF): These are triggered by extreme rainfall, leading to surface runoff and flash floods. They are most common in the Himalayas.
2. Snowmelt-induced Floods (SF): Rising temperatures accelerate snowmelt, increasing river discharge. These floods are most frequent in the Tien Shan region.
3. Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs): These occur when glacial lakes breach due to melting glaciers or landslides, and are commonly found in the Karakoram and Himalayas.
4. Landslide-Dammed Lake Outburst Floods (LLOFs): These floods occur when landslides block rivers, creating temporary lakes that later breach. They are most common in the Hengduan Mountains.

Recommendations:

• Prioritize real-time flood monitoring in vulnerable valleys.
• Strengthen data-sharing agreements between HMA countries to address transboundary flood risks.
• Promote community-based flood mitigation efforts, including locally-led construction of protective infrastructure.
