About Vizhinjam Port:

• Location: Kerala, India.
• Strategic Importance: Situated just 10 nautical miles from a major international shipping route that connects Europe, the Persian Gulf, and the Far East.
• Key Features:
  • It is India’s first deep-water container transshipment port.
  • Transshipment refers to the transfer of cargo or containers from one vessel to another while en route to the final destination.
• The port is being developed on a DBFOT (Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer) basis, utilizing a public-private partnership with a landlord approach.

According to the Ministry of Health, over 6.1 lakh TB patients were identified during the 100-day intensified TB elimination campaign launched in 2024.

About TB:

• Cause: Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
• Transmission: TB spreads through the air via coughs, sneezes, or close contact with an infected person.
• Drug-Resistant TB: TB bacteria can mutate, becoming resistant to first-line antibiotics.
  • Multi-Drug Resistant TB (MDR-TB): Resistant to Isoniazid (INH) and Rifampicin (RIF), two essential first-line drugs.
  • Extensively Drug-Resistant TB (XDR-TB): A severe form of MDR-TB, resistant to first-line drugs, fluoroquinolones, and at least one second-line injectable drug.
• India’s TB Burden: India has the highest TB burden in the world, accounting for over 27% of global cases.
