A $92 Trillion white hydrogen deposit has been discovered in the Moselle Region of France, with an estimated 46 million tons of this reserve. This discovery is being hailed as a game-changing breakthrough in the clean energy sector.
About White Hydrogen:
- Occurrence: Like oil and gas, white hydrogen is naturally occurring, formed through continuous geochemical reactions in hard rock.
- Characteristics: White hydrogen is smaller and lighter than hydrocarbon molecules, making it more likely to escape cap rocks.
- Status: The white hydrogen industry is still in its early stages, with only a few innovators exploring its potential.
Advantages of White Hydrogen:
- Naturally Occurring: Unlike other forms of hydrogen, white hydrogen doesn’t require industrial production.
- Environmentally Superior: It does not emit carbon, making it a cleaner energy source.
- Cost-Effective: No need for inefficient energy conversion or manufacturing processes; it can be produced at scale from reservoirs near end-user markets.
- Co-existence with Helium: The presence of helium in white hydrogen reserves presents an additional commercial opportunity for its exploitation.
Types of Hydrogen Production:
- Green Hydrogen: Produced using clean electricity from surplus renewable energy (like solar or wind). However, its production process is expensive.
- Blue Hydrogen: Made from natural gas through steam reforming. It is considered "low-carbon hydrogen," but the process still emits some greenhouse gases.
- Grey Hydrogen: The most common type, made from natural gas or methane using steam methane reformation. It does not capture greenhouse gases.
- Pink Hydrogen: Created through electrolysis powered by nuclear energy. It is sometimes referred to as purple or red hydrogen and is used as an energy storage medium.
- Black and Brown Hydrogen: Produced from fossil fuels through a gasification process, but it is environmentally damaging.
