Rubber Board Launches Two New Initiatives to Boost Rubber Production
The Rubber Board introduced two new initiatives, iSNR (Indian Sustainable Natural Rubber) and INR Konnect, during the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Rubber Act, 1947.
The Rubber Act of 1947 led to the establishment of the Rubber Board, which operates under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, with the goal of fostering the overall development of India's rubber industry.
About the Initiatives:
iSNR (Indian Sustainable Natural Rubber): This initiative aims to align India's rubber production with the European Union's Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) standards. A key feature of iSNR is its traceability certification, which ensures the rubber's origin is documented.
INR Konnect (Web-based Platform): This platform is designed to connect growers of untapped rubber plantations with potential adopters, thereby maximizing plantation productivity.
Status of India’s Rubber Sector:
Position: India ranks as the third-largest producer and fourth-largest consumer of natural rubber. Thailand leads global rubber production, followed by Indonesia.
Top Producing State: Kerala accounts for over 90% of India's natural rubber production. Other contributing states include Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya.
Key Challenges: Approximately 20-25% of India's rubber plantations remain untapped. The sector also faces challenges such as climatic variations (e.g., heavy rains) and concerns regarding the implementation of the EUDR.
