At UN Biodiversity COP16.2, FAO Calls for Bold Actions to Align Agrifood Systems with Global Biodiversity Targets
At the UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP 16.2) in Rome, the FAO emphasized the need for bold actions to align agrifood systems with global biodiversity objectives. This event builds on the momentum of COP16 in Colombia, where the FAO, in partnership with the Colombian government and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), launched Agri-NBSAPs.
About Agri-NBSAPs
Agri-NBSAPs aim to assist governments in integrating agrifood systems (AFS) into National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and ensuring their effective implementation. NBSAPs serve as a framework for biodiversity conservation and promote the sustainable use of biological resources.
- Countries design their NBSAPs under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF), which seeks to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.
- The framework provides a collective mechanism to support governments in building capacity and identifying strategic actions within AFS to achieve their NBSAP targets.
Why Agrifood Systems Should Be Integrated into NBSAPs
Meeting KM-GBF Targets: More than half of the 23 targets within the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework are linked to agriculture. The framework’s goal is to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.
Reducing Emissions: Agrifood systems are responsible for nearly one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change, habitat degradation, and further biodiversity loss.
Safeguarding Food Security: Biodiversity plays a crucial role in pollination, soil fertility, and pest control. The decline in biodiversity threatens the livelihoods of 3 billion people, as 75% of food crops depend on pollinators.
