India's Approach to Africa Focuses on Building Partnerships, Not Extracting Resources: Minister of External Affairs
At the Japan-India-Africa Business Forum, India’s Minister of External Affairs emphasized that India’s approach to Africa is centered on capacity-building, skill development, and technology transfer, distinguishing it from China’s extractive model. India seeks mutual growth, while China controls various strategic mineral reserves across Africa. Unlike China’s debt-trap diplomacy, India promotes duty-free trade.
The Evolving Nature of India-Africa Relations
Expanding Economic Presence: India is Africa’s 4th largest trading partner, with nearly $100 billion in bilateral trade.
Promoting Sustainable Development in Africa: India has extended $12 billion in concessional credit, funding over 200 infrastructure projects across sectors like railways, power, and agriculture. Key initiatives include the ITEC Program, Pan-African e-Network, e-VidyaBharti, and e-ArogyaBharti.
Advocating for Africa: India supported the African Union’s bid for permanent membership in the G20 during its presidency and fosters cooperation through platforms like the India-Africa Forum Summit.
India-Japan-Africa Collaboration: Through the Asia-Africa Growth Corridor (AAGC), launched in 2017, India and Japan aim to promote democratic, sustainable, and inclusive development in Africa by combining Japan’s investment, India’s technology, and Africa’s talent.
India’s engagement with Africa is especially significant as the coming decades are expected to witness Africa’s rise, following Asia’s growth (as shown in the infographic).
