Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary

The state government's plan to establish a village for tribals in the buffer zone of Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary has sparked objections. A buffer zone is a designated area surrounding a wildlife sanctuary to help protect its biodiversity and ecosystem.

About Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Location: Situated in the heart of the Western Ghats in Kodagu district, Karnataka.

  • Name: The sanctuary is named after Brahmagiri Peak, the highest point in the area.

  • Vegetation: The sanctuary features evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, with patches of shola grassland.

  • Wildlife: It is home to species such as leopards, Indian bison (gaur), barking deer, lion-tailed macaques, and Nilgiri langurs.

  • Methodology: The index assesses impacts across three hazard categories—hydrological, meteorological, and climatological. It uses six key indicators: economic loss, fatalities, and affected populations, both in absolute and relative terms.
