UN Commission for Social Development Highlights the Importance of Strengthening Social Cohesion

The 63rd Session of the UN Commission for Social Development, currently underway, centers around the theme "Strengthening Solidarity, Social Inclusion, and Social Cohesion" as part of advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The UN Commission for Social Development, a body under the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), is primarily tasked with advising the UN on social development issues.

What is Social Cohesion?

Social cohesion refers to the unspoken bonds that unite society, promoting harmony and shared progress among its members. In societies with strong social cohesion, systems are in place to enhance the inclusion of people in disadvantaged situations, whether due to age, gender, disability, race, ethnicity, economic or migration status, or any other factor.

Dimensions of Social Cohesion

Factors that undermine social cohesion include polarization, poverty, marginalization, geopolitical tensions, and an overall environment of uncertainty.

• Ensure the provision of affordable healthcare.
• Implement progressive and effective taxation systems.
• Foster a healthy information environment while combating misinformation and disinformation.
