Home Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Eradicate Left Wing Extremism (LWE) by March 31, 2026
This statement follows a major operation in Bijapur, Chhattisgarh, where security forces successfully eliminated 31 Left Wing Extremists, marking a significant step toward the goal of eliminating LWE.
About Left Wing Extremism (LWE):
- Origins of LWE: Left-wing extremism (LWE), also referred to as Naxalism, originated from the 1967 Naxalbari uprising in West Bengal.
- Ideology of LWE: The movement advocates for the use of violence and armed insurrection as a means to seize state power.
- India's Red Corridor: LWE-affected states, including Chhattisgarh (the most affected), Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Kerala, form what is known as the "Red Corridor."
- Decline in Affected Districts: The number of LWE-affected districts has significantly reduced from 126 in 2013 to just 38 in 2024.
- Increase in Arrests, Surrenders, and Killings: In 2024, there was a sharp rise in extremists arrested (up 17%), surrendered (1.5 times more), and killed (5 times more).
Measures to Tackle LWE:
- Policy Measures: In 2015, the government approved a comprehensive "National Policy and Action Plan to address LWE." In 2017, the operational doctrine 'SAMADHAN' was introduced to combat LWE effectively.
- Security Measures:
- Fortification of Police Stations: Police stations in affected areas are being reinforced under the Special Infrastructure Scheme (SIS).
- Increased Security Spending: Security expenditure in LWE-affected states has nearly tripled, reaching approximately ₹3,000 crore.
- Offensive Strategies: Several operations, such as Operation Green Hunt, Operation Octopus, Operation Double Bull, and Operation Chakrabandha, have been launched as part of the government's offensive strategy to combat LWE.
