IIT Madras and ISRO have jointly developed and successfully activated the aerospace-grade SHAKTI-based semiconductor chip – IRIS (Indigenous RISCV Controller for Space Applications).
The SHAKTI class of systems is based on RISC-V (Reduced Instruction Set Computer Five), an open-source Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) used to design custom processors.
Backed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology under its Digital India RISC-V initiative (DIRV), the project aims to foster the indigenous development of microprocessor-based products offering top-tier security and visibility for users adopting RISC-V technology.
Hybrid Quantum Supercomputer
Engineers in Japan have launched the world’s first hybrid quantum supercomputer, named Reimei.
This 20-qubit quantum computer is integrated with Fugaku, the world’s sixth-fastest supercomputer.
Unlike most quantum computers that use superconducting qubits, Reimei utilizes trapped-ion qubits. This method involves isolating charged atoms (ions) in an electromagnetic field known as an ion trap, where lasers precisely control their quantum state. This technology allows scientists to manipulate ions and use them as qubits to store and process quantum information.
