India’s Palm Oil Imports Fall to 14-Year Low
Palm oil's share of India’s total edible oil imports has dropped below 30% for the first time in over a decade. This decrease is mainly due to the availability of more cost-effective alternatives, such as soyoil.
What is Palm Oil?
Palm oil is derived from the fruit of the African oil palm tree (Elaeis guineensis). There are two types of palm oil:
- Crude Palm Oil: Extracted from the fruit's pulp, primarily used for cooking.
- Palm Kernel Oil: Extracted from the seed, used in non-edible products like cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
Both oils are colorless, odorless, and relatively tasteless. Although native to Africa, over 85% of the world's palm oil is produced in Indonesia and Malaysia.
Palm Oil Production in India
Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala are the major states growing oil palm, contributing to 98% of India’s total production. India remains the largest importer of palm oil globally.
In 2021, India launched the National Mission on Edible Oils - Oil Palm (NMEO-OP) to encourage oil palm cultivation and reduce the reliance on palm oil imports.
