India's Wind Energy Capacity to Reach 63 GW by FY 27
India's annual wind power capacity addition is projected to double, from approximately 3.4 GW in FY 24-25 to around 7.1 GW in FY 26-27, according to a Crisil report.
Wind Energy Status in India
- Total Installed Wind Capacity: India's total installed wind capacity has more than doubled in just over a decade, reaching 48.16 GW as of January 2025. India currently ranks 4th globally in terms of total installed wind capacity.
- Contribution to Renewable Energy: Wind power is the second-largest contributor to India’s renewable energy mix, following solar power, which leads with over 100 GW.
- High Potential Areas for Wind Power: Key states with high wind energy potential include Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.
Initiatives to Promote Wind Energy
- National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy (2018): This policy encourages hybrid projects that combine wind and solar energy, optimizing land use and enhancing grid stability.
- Offshore Wind Energy Policy (2015): This policy supports offshore wind development, with identified potential along the Gujarat and Tamil Nadu coasts.
- Green Energy Open Access Rules (2022): These rules make it easier for consumers to access renewable energy, fostering greater adoption of wind power.
- Renewable Energy Purchase Obligation (RPO): This mandate requires power distribution companies to source a certain percentage of electricity from wind and other renewable sources.
