 International Energy Agency (IEA) Electricity 2025 Report

The IEA's Electricity 2025 report examines emerging trends such as increasing electrification, expanding power systems, and the growing share of weather-dependent energy sources in the global generation mix.

Key Highlights of the Report:

Global Overview:

  • Global energy demand increased by 4.3% in 2024 and is expected to continue growing at nearly 4% annually through 2027.
  • China has become the largest consumer of electricity, surpassing the US and EU.
  • Global CO2 emissions from electricity generation are projected to stabilize between 2025 and 2027, following a 1% rise in 2024.
  • Renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, and hydropower, are expected to account for around 95% of the electricity demand growth between 2025 and 2027.

India:

  • India’s electricity demand surged by 5.8% in 2024 and is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of 6.3% from 2025 to 2027.
  • India’s thermal power capacity is projected to reach 283 GW by 2032.
  • Coal will continue to dominate, comprising 74% of India's power mix in 2024.
  • The share of renewable energy is expected to increase from 21% in 2024 to 27% by 2027, with solar PV driving the expansion.
  • Nuclear power saw a 13% rise in 2024 and is set to grow significantly, tripling from 8.2 GW to 22.5 GW by 2031-32.
