Mercer-Mettl Releases India’s Graduate Skill Index 2025
The report examines the employability of Indian graduates in an AI-driven workplace.
Key Findings:
Overall Employability of Indian Graduates: Employability decreased from 44.3% in 2023 to 42.6% in 2024, mainly due to a lack of non-technical skills such as human resources and digital marketing.
Technical Job Roles: Indian graduates showed the highest employability in technical roles like Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Gender Disparity: 43.4% of male graduates are employable, compared to 41.7% of female graduates.
Employability by College Tier: Graduates from Tier 1 colleges have the highest employability rates.
Soft Skills: 50% of Indian graduates are proficient in key soft skills such as emotional intelligence, creativity, and communication.
Reasons for Low Employability of Indian Graduates:
Education System Gaps: Indian colleges emphasize theory over practical skills.
Impact of AI on Jobs: Automation is altering job roles, creating a need for ongoing upskilling.
Skills Transformation: 28% of employers believe that a significant transformation of technical skills will be necessary for a third of their workforce by 2025 to stay competitive.
Soft Skills Deficit: Educational programs often fail to focus on essential workplace skills like communication, teamwork, and critical thinking.
Initiatives to Boost Employability in India:
Skill Development Programs: Initiatives like Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) and Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) aim to bridge skills gaps.
Women’s Employability: Programs such as Stand Up India and Women in Science and Engineering-KIRAN (WISE-KIRAN) are designed to enhance employability among women.
