India has launched a Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaign aimed at eliminating Lymphatic Filariasis (LF), which is a key part of the country's strategy for LF elimination.
About Lymphatic Filariasis (LF): LF is a neglected tropical disease, also known as “Hathi Paon” or Elephantiasis.
- Causal Agent: The disease is caused by parasitic nematodes (roundworms) from the Filariodidea family.
- Life Cycle of the Filarial Parasite: Typically contracted in childhood, it leads to long-term damage to the lymphatic system, which remains hidden for many years.
- Transmission: The infection is spread through mosquitoes carrying the parasite.
- Impact: LF causes physical disabilities, including lymphoedema (swelling of limbs) and hydrocele (swelling in the scrotum).
What is Mass Drug Administration (MDA)?
- Implementing Agency: The National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC).
- Ministry: Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
- Objective: To eliminate LF from 111 endemic districts across 13 states by eradicating the microscopic filarial parasites present in the bloodstream of infected individuals.
Medication Regimen:
- Double Drug Regimen (DA): Diethylcarbamazine Citrate (DEC) and Albendazole.
- Triple Drug Regimen (IDA): Ivermectin, Diethylcarbamazine Citrate (DEC), and Albendazole.
Strategy for LF Elimination: The initiative aims to eliminate LF by 2027, ahead of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of 2030. This will be achieved through a five-pronged approach:
- Mass Drug Administration (MDA) in mission mode.
- Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention (MMDP).
- Vector Control (Surveillance and Management).
- High-Level Advocacy.
- Innovative Approaches.
