India Achieves Record ₹1.27 Lakh Cr in Domestic Defence Production, Says Defence Minister

While announcing the Aero India conclave in Bengaluru, the Defence Minister emphasized that defence exports have surged by 30 times over the past decade. Aero India, Asia’s largest airshow, is currently centered around the theme "BRIDGE (Building Resilience through International Defence and Global Engagement)".

The Importance of Defence Indigenisation for India:

• Strengthening Sovereign Military Power: Domestic production allows India to bypass global sanctions, such as the US's CAATSA, and ensures access to vital missiles and equipment.
• Readiness for Modern Warfare: The launch of the ADITI scheme, which focuses on developing approximately 30 critical deep-tech and strategic technologies currently absent in the country, is an example of this effort.
• India as a Net Security Provider: For instance, the export of the BrahMos missile to the Philippines has bolstered India’s strategic influence in the Indian Ocean Region.
• Economic Growth: Defence indigenisation promotes job creation, innovation, and attracts investments.

Key Initiatives for Defence Indigenisation:

• Policies and Schemes: Initiatives like the Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy, Make in India, the ‘Positive Indigenization List’, and Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX).
• Global Cooperation: Increased FDI limits (74% under the Automatic Route and 100% under the Government Route) are designed to enable access to modern technologies.
• Additional Efforts: The corporatization of the Ordnance Factory Board, the creation of Defence Industrial Corridors, and the SRIJAN Portal are other major steps forward.
