 Ministry of Health & Family Welfare Launches Intensified Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Screening Campaign

This campaign is part of the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD).
NCD divisions have been set up at the national, state, and district levels to oversee the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the program.
The National NCD Division is led by the Joint Secretary (NCD) at the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, with the Deputy Director General (DDG) serving as the technical head at the Directorate General of Health Services.

Campaign Objective:
The goal is to ensure 100% screening for individuals aged 30 years and above.

Scope of the Campaign:
The screening will focus on prevalent NCDs, including Diabetes, Hypertension, and three common types of cancer (Oral, Breast, and Cervical).

Adopted Strategies:

• Door-to-door outreach
• Availability of essential medical supplies
• Real-time monitoring
• Multi-level coordination at block, district, and state levels

Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Their Current Status
NCDs are chronic diseases that cannot be transmitted from one person to another.
Status: NCDs account for 63% of all deaths in India (74% globally, according to WHO data from 2018).

Key Contributors to NCDs:

• Cardiovascular Diseases: 27%
• Chronic Respiratory Diseases: 11%
• Cancers: 9%
• Diabetes: 3%

Factors Contributing to the Rising Trend of NCDs

• Behavioral Factors: Tobacco use (both smoking and smokeless), alcohol consumption, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, and air pollution (both indoor and outdoor).
• Biological and Physiological Factors: Overweight/obesity, high blood pressure or blood sugar, high cholesterol levels, etc.
• Other Contributing Factors: Stress, hereditary factors, etc.
