Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) Annual Report 2024-25

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has released its Annual Report for 2024-25, highlighting that India boasts the world's second-largest road network, spanning approximately 63.45 lakh kilometers.

Key Highlights of the Report:

  • Highway Network: The National Highway (NH) network has expanded by 60%, growing from 91,287 km in 2014 to 1.46 lakh km currently.
  • Construction Pace: The pace of NH construction has increased nearly threefold, from 12.1 km/day in 2014-15 to 33.8 km/day in 2023-24.
  • Capital Expenditure: MoRTH’s capital expenditure has surged 5.7 times, reaching ₹3.01 lakh crore in 2023-24, up from ₹53,000 crore in 2013-14.
  • Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT): ₹25,900 crore has been raised through the InvIT mode.
  • State Road Transport Undertakings (SRTUs): 58 SRTUs reported a consolidated net loss of about ₹30,000 crore, marking a 68% increase over the last three years. Contributing factors include low fleet utilization, rising fuel costs, and free bus travel schemes.

New Technologies in Road Construction:

  • Bio Binders from Agricultural Waste: Used in bituminous road construction to improve sustainability.
  • Ultra-High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC): Applied in bridge construction to enhance durability and load-bearing capacity.
  • Graphene Modified Asphalt (GIPAVE): Enhances the performance and longevity of asphalt pavements.
  • Gap-graded Rubberized Bitumen (GGRB): Incorporates rubber particles to improve the quality of bitumen.
  • Other Materials: Includes geo-synthetics such as coir/jute, steel and iron slag, copper slag, zinc slag, bio-bitumen, bio-cement, recycled glass aggregate, graphene-enhanced concrete, silica fume, and more.
