Mount Taranaki
New Zealand has recently granted legal personhood to Mount Taranaki, a stratovolcano located in the country.
A stratovolcano is a large, steep, cone-shaped volcano with explosive eruptions, typically due to its viscous magma and trapped gases.
About Mount Taranaki
- Also known as Mount Egmont, Mount Taranaki is situated in Egmont National Park, New Zealand.
- It holds great spiritual significance and is considered a sacred ancestor by the local Māori people.
- The Māori are the indigenous people of Aotearoa/New Zealand.
- In 2014, New Zealand became the first country to grant legal personhood to a natural entity when it recognized Te Urewera Forest as a living entity.
Definition of Forest
The Supreme Court has temporarily restrained the Centre and states from taking any action that would reduce forest areas. This ruling comes amid petitions challenging the amendments made in 2023 to the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980. The amendments excluded approximately 1.99 lakh square kilometers of forest land from the definition of "forests."
In 2024, the Supreme Court directed the government to follow the forest definition from the 1996 judgment in T.N. Godavarman Thirumalpad v. Union of India. According to this ruling, any area recorded as "forest" in government records—regardless of ownership, recognition, or classification—should be considered as forest.
