The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) hosted the World Wetlands Day 2025 celebrations at the Parvati Arga Ramsar Site.

About World Wetlands Day (WWD):
WWD is observed to mark the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in 1971.

• 2025 Theme: ‘Protecting Wetlands for our Common Future’
• India has been a signatory to the Ramsar Convention since 1982.

Parvati Arga Bird Sanctuary

• Location: Tarabganj Tehsil, Uttar Pradesh
• Habitat: The sanctuary is home to two oxbow lakes, which form a permanent freshwater wetland. An oxbow lake is a crescent-shaped lake that forms when a river meander is cut off from the main flow, creating a separate body of water.
• Biodiversity: The sanctuary is home to critically endangered species like the white-rumped vulture and Indian vulture, as well as the endangered Egyptian vulture.
• Ecological Role: The sanctuary is crucial for roosting, breeding, and groundwater recharge.
• Threat: Invasive species like the water hyacinth pose a threat to the ecosystem.

Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary

Proposed oil exploration activities within the eco-sensitive zone of the Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary could have detrimental effects on local wildlife.

About Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary

• Location: Situated in Jorhat district, Assam, the sanctuary is renowned for its diverse non-human primate population.
• Vegetation: The sanctuary features evergreen and semi-evergreen forests.
• Flora: The forest’s upper canopy is dominated by the Hollong tree (Dipterocarpus macrocarpus), while the middle canopy is primarily made up of Nahar (Mesua ferrea).
• Fauna: It is home to India’s only gibbons, the hoolock gibbons, and northeastern India’s only nocturnal primate, the Bengal slow loris. The sanctuary is also recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International.
