Protecting India’s Enduring Archaeological Sites from Environmental Risks
Climate change and extreme weather events are increasingly threatening India's heritage sites. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has implemented several climate-resilient strategies, alongside legal and security measures, to safeguard cultural heritage sites.
How ASI is Safeguarding Cultural Sites from Environmental Damage:
Scientific Methods: ASI employs various treatments such as chemical, biocidal, and hydrophobic methods to preserve sites.
Automated Weather Stations (AWS): In partnership with ISRO, AWS have been set up at key sites to monitor climate conditions.
Air Pollution Monitoring: Laboratories, like those at the Taj Mahal in Agra, are monitoring air quality to reduce environmental damage.
Disaster Management Guidelines: ASI, in collaboration with NDMA, has developed guidelines covering risk assessments, disaster preparedness, and recovery strategies.
Legal and Security Measures:
Legal Protection: The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958 ensures legal protection to prevent encroachments and misuse of heritage sites.
Penalties for Misuse: Section 30 of the Act imposes penalties on those responsible for damaging or misusing sites.
Encroachment Control: Under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1971, Superintending Archaeologists have the authority to issue eviction notices for unauthorized encroachments.
Personnel Deployment: For added security, personnel such as the CISF are stationed at various heritage sites.
National Conservation Policy (2014): This policy guides the preservation and conservation efforts for monuments across the country.
