UNESCO Launches "Imagine a World with More Women in Science" Campaign
In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, UNESCO has launched a new campaign that emphasizes the positive impact of diverse perspectives in science, under the hashtag #EveryVoiceInScience. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared February 11th as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in 2015.
Gender Gap in Science
Global:
- Low Representation: Women account for only one-third of the global scientific community.
- Leadership Gap: Only 1 in 10 leadership positions in STEM fields are held by women.
India:
- STEMM Enrollment: Women make up 43% of enrollments in STEMM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine).
- Women Scientists: The proportion of women scientists is 18.6%, and approximately 25% of R&D projects are led by women.
Challenges
- Social & Cultural Norms: Restrictive gender roles limit opportunities for women in science.
- Lack of Role Models: The scarcity of visible female leaders in science hinders aspirations.
- Workplace Inequality: Gender-biased work cultures create barriers for women in scientific careers.
Recommended Actions
Dismantling Gender Stereotypes and Biases in Science:
- Enhance Visibility of Women Role Models: Include more stories and discoveries by female scientists in school textbooks, and ensure their representation on boards, committees, and panels.
- Innovative Educational Strategies: Remove gender biases from teaching materials and encourage businesses to support women and girls in science through corporate social responsibility initiatives.
- Promote Inclusion and Equity: Adopt workplace policies that encourage diversity, take action against gender-based violence, and promote women into leadership positions.
Opening Educational Pathways for Girls in Science:
- Focus on creating accessible and encouraging educational pathways for girls to enter and advance in scientific fields.
Creating Workplaces that Attract, Retain, and Advance Women:
- Develop workplace environments that are supportive of women’s career growth and advancement in science.
