Vijay Durg (Formerly Fort William)
Fort William in Kolkata, which serves as the headquarters of the Eastern Army Command, has recently been renamed Vijay Durg.

- Originally named after King William III of England.
- The renaming to Vijay Durg honors the oldest fort along Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg coast, which served as a naval base during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
- The fort is located along the banks of the Hooghly River.
- The infamous Black Hole Tragedy occurred at Fort William on June 20, 1756. During this event, Nawab Siraj-ud-Daula imprisoned British captives in a small, overcrowded cell overnight, leading to numerous deaths due to suffocation and extreme heat.
