The Ministry of Mines has reclassified Barytes, Felspar, Mica, and Quartz as Major Minerals following the Union Cabinet's recent approval of the National Critical Mineral Mission. This reclassification is based on the recommendations of an Inter-Ministerial Committee led by Dr. V. K. Saraswat.
A mineral is a naturally occurring substance, either organic or inorganic, with distinct chemical and physical properties.
Reason for Reclassification:
Quartz, Felspar, and Mica are found in pegmatite rocks, which serve as a significant source of various critical minerals. Previously, when these minerals were categorized as minor, associated critical minerals were not reported or extracted. These minerals play crucial roles in advancing technologies, energy transitions, the spacecraft industry, healthcare, and more.
Barytes typically appear as concretions or vein fillings in limestone and dolostone and are often found alongside ores of Antimony, Cobalt, Copper, Lead, Manganese, and Silver. It has numerous industrial applications, including use in oil and gas drilling, electronics, TV screens, rubber, glass, ceramics, paint, radiation shielding, and medical fields.
With the new classification as major minerals, there is expected to be a boost in exploration and scientific mining of these valuable resources, which are essential for critical mineral production.
