A rare pair of White-winged Ducks was recently spotted in the Dihing Patkai National Park, Assam.

About the White-winged Duck (Asarcornis scutulata)

• Nature: This elusive, forest-dwelling duck is typically found in lowland evergreen forests and wetlands.
• Location: Endemic to the Indo-Malayan biogeographical realm.
• Appearance: Known for its striking white patches on the wings and its distinct, ghostly calls.
• Other Facts: The White-winged Duck is the state bird of Assam and is referred to as ‘Deo Hanh’ (spirit duck) in Assamese.
• Protection Status: Listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972; covered by the White-winged Duck Conservation Strategy and Action Plan 2022, a joint effort by the Assam government and the Wildlife Trust of India; classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
