Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs)
Indian and US companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to co-develop the Wave Glider, an Autonomous Surface Vessel (ASV) designed for Anti-Submarine Warfare.
About Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs):
- Description: ASVs are robotic vessels that operate on the surface of the sea and collect oceanographic data.
- Power Source: These vessels use wave energy or propeller-driven propulsion systems.
- Advantages:
- ASVs can carry larger payloads and have higher battery capacity compared to Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs).
- They can operate for extended periods by harnessing renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power.
- Challenges: Navigational risks, especially in congested waters.
Sonic Weapon
Serbia has denied using a banned "sonic weapon" to disperse protesters in Belgrade.
About Sonic Weapons:
- Description: Also known as Acoustic Weapons, these devices produce very loud sounds over long distances. They can also function as voice amplifiers to broadcast messages or other sounds.
- How It Works: Sonic weapons typically consist of numerous modern transducers, which are electronic devices that convert energy from one form to another to produce concentrated and amplified sound. These devices can focus sound beams on specific target areas.
- Impact: Prolonged exposure to sonic weapons can lead to conditions such as tinnitus (a ringing, buzzing, or other sounds in the ears without an external source) and hearing loss.
