Browning Process of Bananas

 Chagos Archipelago

India has expressed its support for Mauritius' position on the sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago.
The Chagos Archipelago has been under British control since 1814, when it was ceded to Britain along with Mauritius.
In 1965, it was designated as the British Indian Ocean Territory and remained under British control even after Mauritius gained independence in 1968.
In 2024, the UK and Mauritius signed an agreement to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago back to Mauritius.

About the Chagos Archipelago
The Chagos Archipelago consists of 58 islands and is located in the Indian Ocean.
Its largest atoll, Diego Garcia, is home to a major US military base.

Gene-edited Bananas
A UK-based biotech company has recently developed gene-edited bananas that are less likely to turn brown during harvesting and transportation.

Browning Process of Bananas
Bananas undergo a colorful life cycle, starting from deep green, transitioning to bright yellow, and eventually turning unappetizingly brown.
This browning is part of the ripening process, triggered by a hormone called ethylene.
Ethylene activates genes responsible for producing an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase (PPO), which causes the bananas to brown.
In gene-edited bananas, the genes associated with PPO have been silenced, preventing browning.
