Reinsurance Firm Becomes First Private Company to Receive IRDAI Approval in India
Reinsurance: Reinsurance is a risk management strategy where insurance companies transfer a portion of their risk to another insurer (reinsurer) to protect against substantial financial losses.
Regulator: The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) oversees the reinsurance sector.
Laws: Reinsurance operations are governed by the Insurance Act, 1938, and the IRDAI (Reinsurance) Regulations, 2018.
Currently, the General Insurance Corporation (GIC Re) is the only public-sector reinsurance company in India. However, Attics Re has become the first private firm to gain IRDAI approval to commence reinsurance business in the country.
