PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) Reaches Milestone of 10 Lakh Installations
Launched in 2024 by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) is now the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative.
Under PMSGMBY, the government has allocated Rs. 4,770 crore in subsidies to support 6.13 lakh beneficiaries. Notably, Chandigarh and Daman & Diu have achieved 100% of their rooftop solar targets for government buildings. Gujarat leads as the top-performing state in solar rooftop installations, followed by Kerala and Uttar Pradesh.
About PMSGMBY
- Objective: To install Rooftop Solar (RTS) systems and provide free electricity of up to 300 monthly units to 1 crore households.
- Duration: The scheme runs until FY 2026-27.
- Eligibility: Available only to Residential Consumers or Residential Welfare Societies (RWAs).
Subsidy Details
- Residential households receive a subsidy of Rs. 30,000 per kW for up to 2 kW, Rs. 18,000 per kW for additional capacity up to 3 kW, and a total subsidy of Rs. 78,000 for capacities greater than 3 kW.
- RWAs are eligible for a subsidy of Rs. 18,000 per kW for common facilities.
Financing
- The program offers collateral-free loans of up to ₹2 lakh at a 6.75% subsidized interest rate through 12 Public Sector Banks.
Creation of Model Solar Villages
- One Model Solar Village will be selected per district to demonstrate solar energy adoption. To qualify, a village must be a revenue village with a population of 5,000+ (or 2,000+ in special category states).
