About Geet Gawai:

• It is a pre-wedding ceremony that incorporates rituals, prayers, songs, music, and dance.
• In December 2016, it was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
• Performed primarily by Bhojpuri-speaking communities of Indian descent in Mauritius.
• Participants: Typically, female family members and neighbors.
• Main Musical Instrument: The Dholak (a two-headed drum).
• Though traditionally performed by women, the practice has expanded to include public performances where men now also participate.
