Indian Patients, According to Lancet Report

CAR T-cell Therapy Shows 73% Success Rate in Indian Patients, According to Lancet Report

A recent Lancet report highlights the success of CAR T-cell therapy in clinical trials, with a 73% effectiveness rate in Indian patients. These results come from Phase I and II trials, where researchers evaluate the safety and efficacy of the therapy for specific conditions.

Key Findings of the Report

  • Lower Costs: The therapy is priced at just 1/20th of the cost of similar global treatments.
  • Side Effects & Risks: The most common side effects observed were anemia in 61% of participants, low platelet counts in 65%, and reduced white blood cell counts, among others.

About CAR (Chimeric Antigen Receptor) T-Cell Therapy
CAR T-cell therapy involves modifying a patient’s immune cells, specifically T-cells, to create potent cancer-fighting cells known as CAR-T cells. T-cells are a type of white blood cell with the primary function of killing other cells. This therapy is designed for specific types of blood cancer and is typically used for patients whose cancer has relapsed or is unresponsive to first-line treatments.

Benefits of CAR T-Cell Therapy

  • Short Treatment Duration: Unlike more aggressive treatments like chemotherapy or stem cell transplants, CAR T-cell therapy allows for quicker recovery.
  • A "Living Drug" with Lasting Benefits: CAR T-cells remain in the body, providing long-term protection against cancer recurrence.

Challenges

  • Cytokine Release Syndrome: An overactivation of immune cells can lead to high fever, organ failure, and other complications.
  • Neurotoxicity: Symptoms can range from confusion and seizures to severe issues like cerebral edema and coma.
  • Antigen Escape: Tumors may develop resistance by losing the antigen targeted by the CAR-T cells
