Union Cabinet Approves Revision of Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme

The Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP) has been implemented nationwide since 2022 with the primary goal of mitigating risks to animal health through various measures.

About the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP)

Objective: To enhance the animal health sector by implementing preventive vaccination programs targeting various livestock and poultry diseases.
The programme includes capacity building, disease surveillance, and the strengthening of veterinary infrastructure.

The LHDCP consists of three main components:

1. National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP)
2. Livestock Health & Disease Control (LH&DC)
3. Pashu Aushadhi

Pashu Aushadhi, a new component introduced to the scheme, aims to improve the availability of generic veterinary medicines through a network of PM-Kisan Samriddhi Kendras and Cooperative Societies.

LH&DC includes three sub-components:

1. Critical Animal Disease Control Programme (CADCP):
   This component focuses on controlling and eradicating two critical diseases—Peste des Petits Ruminants and Swine Fever—to reduce losses for farmers.

2. Establishment and Strengthening of Existing Veterinary Hospitals and Dispensaries - Mobile Veterinary Units (ESVHD-MVU):
   This initiative supports doorstep delivery of livestock health care services.

3. Assistance to States for Control of Animal Diseases (ASCAD):
   This component targets state-prioritized exotic, emergent, and zoonotic animal diseases, including Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD).
