 NITI Aayog Highlights the Role of Quantum Computing in National Security

Advancements in quantum computing, such as increased Qubit coherence (enhancing stability), improved Qubit control and fidelity (boosting accuracy), and progress in error correction (e.g., Google's Willow Chip with a self-checking mechanism), are reshaping national security priorities across various sectors.

Recently, NITI Aayog established the NITI Frontier Tech Hub, a Frontier Tech Action Tank aimed at accelerating India’s transition into a leading Frontier Tech Nation.

Role of Quantum Computing in National Security

1. Cryptography and Cybersecurity:
   Fault-tolerant quantum computers could potentially break public-key encryption algorithms, making traditional internet security, online banking, and communications obsolete.

2. Intelligence Gathering:
   The ability to process vast and complex data will enable enhanced signal intelligence, more effective interception, and unprecedented counterintelligence operations.

3. Military Applications:
   Quantum algorithms could optimize logistics, resource allocation, and battlefield strategies. For example, Quantum AI could power autonomous military drones and robotic systems.

4. Quantum Geopolitics:
   Early breakthroughs in quantum technology and the resulting competition will play a significant role in shaping future global power dynamics.

Key Recommendations

1. Continuous Monitoring and Cryptographic Intelligence:
   Establish a task force to monitor global advancements in quantum technology and evaluate vulnerabilities in critical national systems.

2. Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) Transition Plan:
   Develop a transition plan based on risk prioritization, with a clear roadmap for adopting post-quantum cryptography.

3. Technology Access Agreements:
   Forge bilateral partnerships to facilitate the rapid adoption of scalable quantum technologies.
