MGNREGA Sees 82% Increase in Employment Generation
Between FY 2014-15 and FY 2024-25, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has generated 3,029 crore person-days of employment, marking an 82% rise. Additionally, Aadhaar seeding has been completed for 99.49% of active MGNREGA workers.
About MGNREGA:
- Launched: In 2005 by the Ministry of Rural Development as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme.
- Objective: To provide at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment per year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual labor.
- Beneficiaries: All household members aged 18 years or older and residing in rural areas.
- Coverage: Nationwide, excluding districts with 100% urban populations.
- Wage Rates: Vary by state and are determined based on changes in the Consumer Price Index for Agricultural Labor (CPI-AL), reflecting rural inflation.
Key Achievements:
- Increased Women’s Participation: Women's participation has grown from 48% in FY 2013-14 to over 58% in the current financial year.
- Reduction in Water-Stressed Rural Blocks: The number of water-stressed rural blocks has decreased from 2,264 to 1,456, a 35% reduction over the past decade.
- Growth in Creation of Individual Assets: The share of individual assets created has risen from 17.6% in FY 2013-14 to 56.99% in FY 2024-25.
- Amrit Sarovars: Over 68,000 Amrit Sarovars have been created across the country during Phase I of the initiative.
