Prime Minister Chairs 7th Meeting of the National Board for Wildlife

The Prime Minister emphasized the use of technology, such as remote sensing and AI, along with collaboration between institutions like the Wildlife Institute of India, Forest Survey of India, and BISAG-N, to address challenges like forest fires and human-animal conflicts.

Key Decisions Taken:

  • First Riverine Dolphin Estimation Report Released: The report estimates the number of riverine dolphins at 6,327.

    • Highest Numbers: Uttar Pradesh > Bihar > West Bengal > Assam.
  • Establishment of National Referral Centre for Wildlife (Junagadh): This centre will focus on wildlife health and disease management.

  • Creation of Centre of Excellence at SACON, Coimbatore: This centre will address human-wildlife conflict.

  • Initiation of the 16th Asiatic Lion Population Estimation in 2025: The last estimate was conducted in 2020.

  • Expansion of Cheetah Introduction Projects: Cheetah introduction will be expanded to Gandhisagar Sanctuary (Madhya Pradesh) and Banni Grasslands (Gujarat).

  • National Great Indian Bustard Conservation Action Plan: A new project will be launched for the conservation of Gharials.

  • Support for Asiatic Lion Conservation at Barda Wildlife Sanctuary: The initiative will include prey augmentation and habitat improvement for Asiatic lions.
