The Union Minister for Science and Technology emphasized the pivotal role of India's space sector in transforming governance practices during the ‘Space-Tech for Good Governance’ Conclave, organized by the Indian Institute of Democratic Leadership.

Role of Space Technology in Governance

Resource Management:

• Mapping: Satellites such as RESOURCESAT and CARTOSAT provide essential geospatial data for mapping land, water, and mineral resources.
• Agriculture: Space technology supports farmers with vital data for crop management and productivity improvements, exemplified by the Krishi-Decision Support System.
• Forests: IRS satellites assist the Forest Survey of India in mapping forest cover and monitoring forest fires.
• Infrastructure: PM Gati Shakti uses spatial planning tools and ISRO imagery to coordinate infrastructure projects across various ministries, including Bharatmala and Sagarmala.

Social Sector:

• Healthcare: Space technology enhances healthcare delivery, as seen in ISRO's Health-QUEST initiative.
• Tele-education: Space technology facilitates tele-education by providing live lectures and interactive training in remote areas, through programs like EDUSAT.
• Disaster Management: ISRO's National Database for Emergency Management portal functions as a national GIS-based data repository, aiding disaster management efforts.
• Security: GSAT-7 and RISAT satellites ensure secure communications and border surveillance, while Mission Shakti (2019) demonstrates India's space defense capabilities.

Transparency & Accountability:

• Space technology is utilized for geo-tagging MGNREGA assets, a measure launched in FY 2016-17, ensuring greater transparency.

Although India's space sector is sometimes criticized for its allocation of national resources towards high-end space exploration, its technology plays a crucial role in enhancing governance and fostering socio-economic development.
