The Centre has made "Thematic Hub” operational for India’s Quantum Revolution

The government has made the "Thematic Hub" operational as part of India's Quantum Revolution. Under the National Quantum Mission (NQM), four thematic hubs have been set up. These hubs will focus on technology development, human resource development, entrepreneurship growth, industry collaborations, and international partnerships.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has been designated as the coordinating management centre for these hubs.

Key technology areas of the Thematic Hubs include:

  1. Quantum Computing: Quantum computers utilize qubits to store and process information, unlike traditional computers where bits can only be 0 or 1. Qubits can represent both 0 and 1 simultaneously. This vertical is led by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.

  2. Quantum Communication: This field involves encoding information into quantum states, typically of photons (light particles), and transmitting them over distances. IIT, Madras leads this area.

  3. Quantum Sensing and Metrology: Quantum sensing involves using quantum systems for atomic-scale measurements, while Quantum Metrology focuses on creating ultra-sensitive, high-resolution measurements of physical conditions. This vertical is led by IIT, Bombay.

  4. Quantum Materials and Devices: This field explores the structural, electrical, and magnetic properties of various nanoscale systems across a wide range of materials. IIT, Delhi leads this area.
