Comptroller and Auditor-General (CAG)

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the central government regarding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed, calling for a neutral process for appointing the Comptroller and Auditor-General (CAG).

About CAG

Article 148-151 of the Indian Constitution governs the office of the CAG.

  • Appointment: The CAG is appointed by the President through a warrant under his hand and seal.
  • Post-Office Eligibility: The CAG is not eligible for any further office under either the Government of India or any State after relinquishing the post.
  • Salary and Service Conditions: These are determined by Parliament through legislation or as specified in Schedule II of the Constitution.
  • Removal: The process for removal of the CAG is similar to that of a Supreme Court Judge.
  • Oath of Office: The oath is administered by the President or an authorized representative.

Powers & Duties of the CAG (Article 149)

The CAG audits the accounts of the Union, States, and other bodies as prescribed by law passed by Parliament.


Bodo Tribe

According to the Union Home Minister, over 80% of the conditions outlined in the 2020 Bodo Peace Accord have been implemented. The Accord, signed between the Central Government, Assam Government, and Bodo Groups, granted greater autonomy to the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

About the Bodo Tribe

  • The Bodo are the largest ethnolinguistic group in Assam, primarily residing in the BTR, which consists of four districts.
  • Language: Bodo (or Boro) is one of India's 22 scheduled languages.
  • Constitutional Status: The Bodo tribe is recognized as a plain tribe under both the Fifth and Sixth Schedules of the Indian Constitution.
